In the United States, we have a flexible hybrid work policy for employees who live within 30 miles of our office headquartered in New York City and our office in Seattle. Employees within the New York and Seattle metropolitan areas are expected to work from the designated office twice a week, unless there is a job-specific requirement to be in the office every workday. Employees outside of these areas are considered part of our remote-first workforce. We believe our hybrid approach for those near our NYC and Seattle offices increases productivity through more in-person collaboration where possible.

The Role: Director of Engineering

We are looking for an experienced Director of Engineering to manage and continue to scale a rapidly growing and diverse development team. The responsibilities include leading a talented group of developers and engineers, implementing processes and tools that maximize developer productivity, and collaborating with product and program managers to deliver innovative yet seamless products that delight customers.

To be successful in this role, you should have a strong engineering background, prior organizational leadership experience, be able to collaborate with team members, and be a strategic problem-solver. In addition, this person must demonstrate excellent communication skills, have a solid foundation in software design and be effective across multiple technical disciplines.

The Gemini development teams focus heavily on ownership and the quality aspects of the development cycle where the developer of each service is responsible for ensuring that relevant monitoring, alerting and logging capabilities are built into the service and that automated test suites are continuously updated.

This is a unique opportunity to work with the leading technologies and methodologies as well as be a key strategic player in the definition and implementation of Gemini’s technology offerings.

Responsibilities:

  • Technical Leadership: Develop and maintain an engineering roadmap as well as co-developing the technical strategy that will continue to drive technical innovation and drive large scale business growth.
  • Program Management and Engineering Execution: Ensure that the product vision is realized through excellence in execution, ensuring that design requirements are met, and we provide consistent user experience. Working with Product teams, Technical Program managers and business leadership to efficiently and at high velocity deliver on program and project goals in a rapidly evolving industry, with a strong focus on maintaining the high level of availability and security for our users.
  • Recruiting and team-building: Lead the scaling of Gemini’s engineering teams through recruiting strategies that efficiently identify & attract the world’s top engineering talent; develop Gemini’s current talent by honing functional and qualitative skills.
  • Engineering Processes and Practices: Develop and maintain development methodologies which allow development teams to rapidly iterate and provide consistent quality at high velocity. Plan the development of highly automated build, test and deploy frameworks in collaboration with our infrastructure teams and other internal groups.
  • Technology Management: Lead, manage and mentor senior level engineering directors that have engineering managers and staff reporting to them. Manage staff goals, compensation, performance feedback, career development and opportunities for continuous learning.

Qualifications:

  • At least 15 years of consumer application software engineering experience in developing complex, large and scalable software solutions; demonstrable technical experience in software design, development, testing and deployment.
  • Experience rapidly growing a software engineering team from the size of a hundred to several hundred or thousands.
  • Hands-on experience and ability to write functional and maintainable code; able to articulate and demonstrate how to use software development techniques and methods to deliver new platforms and solutions.
  • A recognized thought leader who can publicly represent Gemini at conferences and other forums to push our technical brand.
  • Designed and developed highly available and resilient applications at scale, preferably global internet scale for both B2B and B2C.
  • Work with CTO and other technology leaders to continue to enhance our technology roadmap for the evolution of our technology platform.
  • Self-organize, collaborate and manage efforts with peers and teams across responsibility areas, languages, geography and time zones; acts as an informed captain and makes data-backed decisions on behalf of Gemini.
  • Be a self-starter, curious and not afraid to ask questions and challenge the way things are done today; farm for dissent and seek alternative views to both problems and your solutions.
  • See a problem or opportunity, take ownership and act on it independently; develop methods and habits to be an informed and motivated product owner.
  • Inform, educate and develop team members, peers and customers to grow expertise, develop alignment and encourage collaboration; being able to present your ideas concisely and in an informative manner to both large and small audiences is an important skill for your role as a technical leader.
  • Know when to take ownership and when to escalate issues; our teams work to cover a global footprint and having self, situational and organizational awareness to know when you should take the lead on an issue and when you should bring in reinforcements to help tackle the problem at hand is critical.
  • Develop technical documentation, diagrams and templates and be rigorous in maintaining accuracy and relevancy of developed materials.

Salary Range: The base salary range for this role is between $269,000 - $336,000 in the State of New York, the State of California and the State of Washington. This range is not inclusive of our discretionary bonus or equity package. When determining a candidate’s compensation, we consider a number of factors including skillset, experience, job scope, and current market data.
